What is a MoonTag?

A MoonTag is your unique username on MoonPay. It makes sending or requesting crypto simple — no long wallet addresses needed. Just use someone’s MoonTag to connect directly with their MoonPay account.

How is this different from sending to a wallet address?

It isn’t. You're sending to a wallet address, but MoonTags makes it easier:

  • A MoonTag is a unique username that is linked to a user’s MoonPay account

  • If you want to send or request crypto from another MoonPay user, just insert their MoonTag instead of their wallet address

  • The crypto moves between the non-custodial wallet addresses linked to the relevant MoonPay account

Important: You can only send to wallets on blockchains supported by MoonPay — MoonTags work wherever wallet address transfers are supported. If a chain isn’t supported, the transfer (via MoonTag or address) won’t go through.

MoonTags simplify crypto peer-to-peer transfers, making them more accessible — especially for users who aren’t familiar with wallets or chains.

How do I create or change my MoonTag?

  • First login: You’ll be prompted to create a MoonTag — this one is discoverable by default

  • If skipped: A MoonTag derived from your email will be auto‑generated — but it won’t be discoverable unless you set it to be

  • Changing your MoonTag: Go to Account Settings. You can update your MoonTag, and your previous one is reserved for 3 months. You’re limited to 3 changes every 6 months to prevent misuse

How to send crypto via MoonTag

  1. Open the MoonPay mobile app

  2. Tap the three dots (⋯) next to Sell

  3. Select Send

  4. Enter the recipient’s MoonTag, choose the currency, and amount

  5. Review the details and confirm the transaction

How to receive crypto using your MoonTag

There are two ways to receive:

Option A: Share your MoonTag

Others can send crypto to you anytime. You get a notification when money arrives.

Option B: Send a request

  1. Open the app → tap the three dots next to Sell (⋯) → then Request

  2. Enter the sender’s MoonTag, select the currency, and the amount

  3. Review and confirm. The sender gets notified and sees the request in their account. You'll get a confirmation when they complete it

FAQs

Which crypto can I send via MoonTag?

You can send any cryptocurrency supported by MoonPay, across any supported blockchain — no manual bridging or complex addresses required.

What fees apply?

Only one fee applies to sending via MoonTag: the “total fee”, which covers crypto‑asset transfer costs (like congestion or operational costs). This amount appears clearly before you confirm the send. No extra fees apply.

What information is required to send via MoonTag?

You only need the recipient’s MoonTag. MoonPay automatically determines the correct wallet address and blockchain, simplifying the transfer process.

How can I track or confirm that a send was successful?

Check the Activity tab in your MoonPay app. Look up the transaction by blockchain (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum).

How can others find me via MoonTag?

If discoverability is enabled, other MoonPay users can find you by your MoonTag during Send or Request flows.

  • New users are discoverable by default

  • Auto‑generated MoonTags (from email) are not discoverable unless you opt in

  • You can opt in or out at any time in Settings

To disable discovery:

  1. Open the app → go to Settings → tap @MoonTag

  2. Toggle off one or both:

    • Let others find me by my MoonTag

    • Let others find me by my phone number

This removes your profile from search results.

How can I protect myself from scams?

  • Only transact with people you know

  • Be wary of lookalike usernames or profile pictures

  • If you receive suspicious requests, avoid interacting

  • MoonPay is actively developing new tools to help identify trusted contacts and report suspicious activity

What if I send crypto to the wrong MoonTag?

  • Just like sending to a wrong wallet address, transactions are final and can't be reversed

  • Always double‑check the MoonTag before sending

  • If you believe you’ve been tricked or sent to the wrong user, contact MoonPay support. They can't reverse the transaction, but can guide you on possible steps
