Who can use this feature? PayBox Desktop is available on Mac at launch. Support for other platforms is coming soon.
Overview
PayBox Desktop is a native app that gives your AI agent a local home base — no terminal required. It bundles the PayBox CLI, Claude Code, and Codex CLI, pre-installs PayBox skills, and gives you a chat interface for talking to your agent directly.
Think of it as the same idea behind PayBox: store credentials once, let AI agents pay securely, just running on your machine instead of through a cloud connector; your credentials stay in PayBox, your agent gets scoped, revocable access, and every operation still follows the grants and approval modes you set.
Tip: Already connected PayBox to Claude.ai or ChatGPT via the MCP connector? PayBox Desktop is a separate, local way to run Claude Code or Codex — you don't need to choose one over the other, and grants/approval modes work the same way across both. See How agent connections work in PayBox for details on grants and client keys.
Key benefits
Chat interface, no terminal required — PayBox Desktop installs and configures everything for you
Bundled AI harnesses — Claude Code and Codex CLI are installed and kept up to date automatically
Skills shared across runtimes — install a skill once, use it from either Claude Code or Codex
Native automations — schedule recurring agent tasks with built-in recovery and notifications
Optional scoped wallet-signing key — set up signing for wallet operations only if you need it
Keys never leave your machine — PayBox CLI remains the sole authority for grants, approvals, and signing
How to get started
Setting up PayBox Desktop takes three parts: download and sign in, optionally set up wallet signing, then connect your AI agent.
Open the app and sign in with your PayBox account using your passkey. If you don't have a PayBox account yet, see PayBox: store credentials once, let AI agents pay securely to create one first
Optional: set up a scoped wallet-signing key if your agent needs to sign wallet operations
Connect your AI agent — Claude Code or Codex. Sign in with your existing Anthropic or OpenAI account, and PayBox Desktop installs a verified version of Claude Code or Codex CLI in the background
Start chatting. Your agent has PayBox CLI and your installed skills available immediately
Note: PayBox never sees or stores your Anthropic or OpenAI login. Those credentials stay between you and the AI provider.
Important: No financial action is complete until PayBox CLI confirms it. Your agent's chat output or a clean process exit is never treated as proof that a payment, signature, or transaction went through — always check the PayBox dashboard or your agent's tool output for the actual result.
How approvals work in PayBox Desktop
PayBox Desktop doesn't change how approvals work — it's the same grants and approval modes described in How agent connections work in PayBox, just triggered from a local agent instead of a cloud one.
Always approve — every operation pauses for your sign-off
Approve above limit — small, pre-scoped operations run automatically; anything larger needs your approval
Autonomous within policy — the agent acts without per-operation approval, but only inside the grant you've configured
Tip: Start with a narrowly scoped grant — one wallet, one approval mode, a low spend limit — and widen it as you build trust in how your agent behaves.
Automations and skills
PayBox Desktop can run scheduled tasks on your behalf using native automations, with built-in recovery if a task fails partway through and a history you can review. Skills you install are shared between Claude Code and Codex, so switching which AI you're chatting with doesn't mean reinstalling anything.
Managing your connection
You can revoke PayBox Desktop's access at any time from the Paybox dashboard, the same way you'd revoke any other agent client. Removing the grant immediately prevents further requests, and the client key becomes useless once revoked.
Important: If you think your PayBox has been compromised, use the kill switch in your account settings immediately, then contact our support team — they can freeze your account while you investigate.
